How to Care for a Fine Art Photography Print

  • Proper care can extend the life of a fine art photography print from decades to centuries.

Choose the Right Display Environment

  • Light: Avoid direct sunlight, which degrades pigments via UV radiation. Use indirect daylight or controlled interior lighting. If framed, ensure UV-filtering glazing.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Maintain stable conditions (ideally 40–50% RH, 65–75°F). Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, or uninsulated spaces with high moisture swings.
  • Pollutants: Keep prints away from smoke, cooking fumes, and air pollution to prevent residue buildup.

Handle with Care

  • Always handle by the edges with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves to prevent oils and dirt from transferring to the surface.
  • Avoid touching the printed area; if necessary, use a soft, lint-free cloth.

Frame for Longevity

  • Use archival framing with acid-free matting, museum-grade backing board, and UV-protective glass or acrylic.
  • For large prints, professional framing ensures structural stability and protects from dust and physical damage.
  • Floating frames can be elegant while offering extra protection.

Cleaning

  • Dust gently with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • For fingerprints or smudges, lightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild, ammonia-free glass cleaner; wipe in smooth, even motions.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

Storage

  • When not on display, store in a cool, dry, stable environment.
  • Use archival boxes or tubes; keep prints flat or rolled carefully to avoid creasing.
  • Never lean unframed prints against walls long-term, as this can cause permanent creases

Tip: Regularly inspect prints for discoloration, warping, or moisture damage, and address issues promptly.   By controlling light, humidity, handling, and framing, you can preserve the tonal depth, color, and texture of your fine art photography prints for generations.
